Tookutemo feat.WISE

Artist: Kana Nishino
Release Date: March 18, 2009
Label: Avex Trax
Personal Rating: 4/5

1. Tookutemo feat.WISE
2. GIRLS JUST WANT TO HAVE FUN
3. Saturday☆Night feat.GIORGIO 13

Tookutemo feat.WISE seems to have been the turning point in her career. (for the better!) The song is completely R&B oriented. Although I’m not usually very fond of R&B sounds, Nishino showed much improvement in her vocal performance and the arrangement isn’t too typical. Instead of the overused R&B beats, the arranger of the song pretty much went all out on the piano/keyboard sounds. Not to mention, the song is also more memorable than the usualy R&B oriented music.

GIRLS JUST WANT TO HAVE FUN is a cover of Cyndi Lauper’s original version of the song. I’ve never listened to the original version but I could definiately push through my judgement and say that I only enjoyed this song because of the background music. The vocals and rapping were a little overwhelmed by the instrumentals. Otherwise, this is a decent B-side track.

Finally, Saturday☆Night feat.GIORGIO 13 brings back the awesomeness of the single by displaying old (but catchy) sounds and an energetic vocal performance from Nishino. The song has a very catchy tune. But it does seem that every track on this single has a rapper in it. (Unless they’re all featuring WISE as the rapper)

Mirai e…

Artist: HIMEKA
Release Date: May 26, 2010
Label: Sony Music Japan
Personal Rating: 4.5/5

1. Mirai e…
2. Winding Road
3. Mirai e… (Instrumental)
4. Winding Road (Instrumental)
5. Mirai e… (Anime Edit) [(Limited edition bonus track)

Right from the start of the song, Mirai e… already displays beautiful instrumentals and Himeka gives out a very gentle yet graceful vocal performance. I really loved how she gives out some sort of high pitch vibrato and power throughout the chrous. Sometimes I would like to wonder how Himeka got so good with her Japanese along with her amazing vocal performance! There’s also a really long orchestrated instrumental during the middle of the song which makes the arrangement even more graceful! I really liked how there was more power in the vocals near the end of the song as well. Definitely a new favorite song of mines! (I had this on repeat over 20 times even though the song is like six minutes long!)

In contrast to the very long and elegant Mirai e…, Winding Road is around four minutes long with a more aggressive arrangement. I could really see this being an anime opening theme. This is probably the type of song that’s only worth listening during the first two repeats of the chorus, otherwise, I would just skip on to the next track since there’s pretty much the same melody during the rest of the song. However, she still does have great vocals!

Mou Nido to…

Artist: BENI
Release Date: December 10, 2008
Label: Universal Records
Personal Rating: 4/5

1. Mou Nido to…
2. STAY
3. Mou Nido to… (Instrumental)
4. STAY (Instrumental)

On a Personal Note: I was actualyl planning to review BENI releases after I finished Ayu’s reviews but it doesn’t seem like I’ll finish them anytime soon so might as well start now! I’m only going to review the releases after Beni Ashiro moved to Universal Records.

Mou Nido to… is like a Beni version of Dozhi-T’s Mou Ichido but better. Instead of the original laid back ballad atmosphere there seems to be more of a guitar and piano feel. I can’t really compare her vocals to her older releases since I began listening to Beni from this single onwards but I have read that she has improved!

Next up is STAY which seemed more agressive than the A-side. It’s quite more R&B with a memorable arrangement and I feel that this is probably the song that got me into Beni. I’ve heard that her music under Universal Records is much better from when she was under the Avex label.

DREAMIN’

Artist: Jasmine
Release Date: May 12, 2010
Label: Sony Music Japan
Personal Rating: 4/5

1. DREAMIN’
2. L.I.P.S.
3. sad to say [BUZZER BEATS Remix]

On a Personal note: I’ve just decided to get off my lazy butt and force myself to write a review today! The gap since the last post seems to have been a really long time ago! Well… not really.

My reaction when I first listened to DREAMIN’ was “finally! An effing ballad!” Jasmine’s vocals seemed to have really reached out to me this time around. Before, her singing would just be addictive and stuck in my head for days but with Dreamin’ I’m just really impressed. Sure it’s a sudden change but at least she’s not like alan who stuck with ballad A-sides throughout her first era.

Now L.I.P.S. was what was totally unexpected after listening to the calm and soothing Dreamin’. L.i.p.s. still takes on the face of her older music but it still doesn’t hold a candle next to This is not a game mainly because the energy of the arrangement and the vocals were just “there.”

There isn’t much of a difference in terms of arrangement in the sad to say (BUZZER BEATS Remix) compared to the orignal since the only element that was added were just extra beats. This is pretty much just the orignal song but with extra beats.

Life

I’m so busy! I don’t even have time to log into wordpress anymore! This is really horrible!!! So… I just wanted to let you know that I haven’t forgotten about this blog yet by giving you a decently long list of reasons:

– I got Pokemon Soul Silver for my birthday two weeks ago: Which is a dead giveaway that I’m totally hooked!
– I also got the new Zelda game for DS!!! I’ve received too many games for my birthday so it’s getting difficult to switch around between games
– Presentation projects: I’ve had at least two projects to finish up this week!
– Prom: seems really stressful
– Term paper: They were due last week but they sucked up a whole lot of energy
– Ap testing: why did they have to be on the same week as my term paper?
– Birthdays!: I had to celebrate at least three birthdays during the past two weeks
– Wedding: Yes, a grand wedding
– Trip planning: I think I already wrote that I’m going on a trip during the first two weeks of June…
– Lab papers: Okay, these take forever
– New blog: I started a short story blog on blogspot last week for one of my english teachers. (Boy, she like my stories for some reason) I won’t post the link because I’m so embarassed!
– Trailers: My brother’s still going to buy me FF XIII as a (hella) belated birthday present so I’ve been speding my freetime reading reviews and watching trailers on you tube because I’m so excited!!!!

Can’t you believe it!? I did so much in one month! (I actually feel proud of this) Finals are coming up in two weeks which also means that the last day of school is in two weeks!!!! I’ll probably post reviews this weekend but the chance might be slim… (Prom, hw, projects, etc.)

Speedrive

Artist: misono
Release Date: July 12, 2006
Label: Avex Trax
Personal Rating: 3.5/5

1. Speedrive
2. Ari to Kirigirisu ~10 years later~
3. Speedrive (Instrumental)
4. Ari to Kirigirisu ~10 years later~ (Instrumental)

Apparently, both of misono’s releases were give relatively average reviews but after listening to Speedrive, I begin to appreciate the older releases more. For the most part, the song is quite messy and laid back. But I find it quite funky when I hear bits of the arrangement attempting to imitate the screeching of a skidding wheels. While misono’s vocals have shown a little improvement since the last release, this doesn’t seem to be the song to use it to its potential.

Ari to Kirigirisu ~10 years later~ sounded a bit generic at first but then progresses into stronger vocals and more instruments. The pace of the song does seem faster and misono does continue to keep up with her stronger vocals. But there was some part in the middle when her vocals get cut off or something… Porbably one of her better B-sides.

Resolutions

I was just scanning through my older posts and found my very first post. I remember writing about my plans and how I chose to review J-pop music. This post was written about a year and a half ago so my writing wasn’t all that good. I had a fun time remembering my times with blogspot and I thought that it would be interesting enough to feature it in this post =)

View it HERE!

ha ha. I knew I said I would be busy but I’m really in the mood to procrastinate 😀
